Topic of the Week 3 (Sp’13)

Think about an event you have attended in the last 30 days that promoted diversity. How did you find out about the event (i.e. poster, Facebook, word of mouth, newsletter, etc.)? Why did  you attend? Can you identify aspects of traditional public relations that was used or should have been used to increase success of the event?

OR

Write a blog post reaction to the panel of guest speakers that joined us in class last Friday. Some things to get you started: similarities and differences among jobs; daily duties; takeaways; lessons learned to prepare you for a career in public relations; etc.

Topic of the Week 2 (Sp’13)

  • Discuss the portrayal of public relations in mass media. Are the images helpful or hurtful to the field? Can/should these images be changed?

OR

  • Think of a current campaign and discuss what you perceive as the public relations elements of the campaign. Why do you categorize those items as representative of public relations?

  • Write a blog post making an analogy between public relations and something you’re interested in (eg. traveling, sports, decorating, etc.)

OR

  • Compare and contrast public relations and publicity, with real examples of each.

Topic of the Week 4 (Fall ’12)

  • Provide an argument as to why it is/or is not beneficial for a non-public relations major to complete an introductory level public relations course.

  • Think about the last five movies/concerts you have seen. How did you find out about them? (Poster? Word of mouth? Newspaper/Magazine advertisement? Facebook fan page? Emailed newsletter, etc.) Some individuals dismiss traditional public relations and advertising, but what’s your experience?

Topic of the Week 3 (Fall ’12)

Discuss the public relations elements of a current campaign. What makes these elements public relations focused? Identify as many of the eight elements of program planning with respect to this campaign. Embed a picture, Youtube clip, etc. of the campaign into your post.

OR

Write a post using the following prompt: Why I will/will not use StumbleUpon/Twitter/Posterous/Facebook/Pinterest/Google Reader/Google Plus (insert social media platform of your choice)… and why. (You only need to choose one social media platform to discuss.)

  • Discuss a current ethical lapse in the public relations industry.
